NEC decided it was high time its X Series of liquid crystal displays got some new blood, so to speak, so it went ahead and designed a new, large-screen, professional-grade model with special emphasis on environment friendliness.

Flat panel TVs may be starting to sell less, as will other products on the IT industry, but NEC doesn't seem phased by this.

Granted, in this case it hasn't approached the consumer market either, having created not a TV or PC monitor, but a professional-grade display.

The product in question is the X Series X551UN which, as its name implies, has a diagonal of 55 inches and a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

It utilizes LED backlighting, for low power consumption and overall better image quality, while the total lack of mercury components further enforce the newcomer's status as “green” device.

The brightness is of 500 cd/m2 and the contrast ratio of 4,000:1, while DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI-D ports ensure connectivity.

All in all, the NEC X Series X551UN should cope with video wall applications where constant, 24/7 operation is a must.

“We’re very excited about all the new features and capabilities that are integrated in the X551UN and the solutions that can be created because of their addition,” said Rachel Karnani, Product Manager for Large-Screen Displays at NEC Display Solutions.

“Video walls will be incredibly crisp with full 1080p resolution, and the sheer 55-inch size in any configuration will surely stop traffic in any environment. The display is future-proofed with Intel’s OPS option slot while continuing to offer all the technologies of the X462UN that our customers have made so popular.”

Like so many others before it, the newcomer has not been made immediately available. Instead, the first shipments will be carried out starting in June, 2011. A 3-year warranty is offered and the price is a merciless $7,799.
