There’s a hidden feud going on between computer manufacturers these days, as they race to create the world’s lightest and slimmest laptop. Ultrabooks have become mainstream these days, but even so most of them fall in the 1.1 kg / 2.4 pounds – 1.8 kg / 3.9 pounds category. Can’t the standard go beyond that?

It appears it can. NEC has just pulled out of the bag what has been called the world’s lightest laptop, dubbed LaVie Z LZ750/NS.

For the unbelievers, the claims seem to have some foundation. The LaVie series weighs a meager 795 grams that apparently can be attributed to its super light magnesium alloy casing.

Now let’s move and see what surprises NEC has in store not only in terms of design, but also of specs. The laptop features a 13-inch touch-enabled display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. This is no ordinary screen, but a Sharp WQHD IGZO unit.

Under the bonnet, NEC has slipped an impressive Core i7-4500U clocked at 1.8GHz coupled with 4GB of RAM and HD4000 Graphics. Windows 8.1 is the on-board operating system, while storage capacity has been set at 256GB.

What more could you ask for? Maybe a decent battery life. NEC has that covered as well. The laptop provides up to 9 hours of juice if it’s used in normal conditions. Talk about performance.

As for availability, nothing specific is known yet, except that the LaVie line will come to Japan next month. As for other territories, nothing has been officially announced. We don’t expect it to come very cheap.
