The consumer and professional markets may be swarming with an entire army of different LCD (liquid crystal display) models, but there are still some that stand out from the rest, either through their sheer size or some other special feature. NEC Decided it was time to make another display that stands out, only not just through one trait, but several. As such, it put together the MultiSync Reference 271 professional monitor, a large display solution that should perform admirably in the hands of graphical designers and in other professional applications.

On the entry-level and even the mainstream markets, a resolution of 1366 x 768, HD, is usually found satisfactory by most. On the performance and enthusiast fronts, however, the 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution has practically become a must, especially now that graphics cards have DirectX 11 and up to 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM. NEC thought it would go even higher though, which is why it gave its offspring's 27-inch 10-bit P-IPS panel a native resolution of no less than 2560 x 1440 pixels.

The resolution, in itself, is enough to classify this display as a high-end professional product, but the rest of the feature set is just as noteworthy. For instance, the panel can reproduce 98% of the Adobe RGB color space, which makes it quite suited for the aforementioned graphical design or video applications. The wide viewing angles of 178 degrees, both horizontal and vertical, are also an asset. Furthermore, the contrast ratio is of 1,000:1 and the brightness is an intriguing 360 cd/m2. Finally, the device has a response time of 5ms.

The NEC MultiSync Reference 271 can receive video input from a wide variety of video cards by means of its D-Sub and DVI inputs. Retailers are already accepting pre-order, for a price of 1,800 Euro.
