If the topic of WiMAX happens to pop in one of your conversations these days, you will most certainly mention Taiwan, which is the country that seems to show the highest concern with the fast deployment of a WiMAX network at a national scale. And, because WiMAX is expected to become the next widespread standard in wireless connectivity, we should all turn our attention towards Taiwan and see what how things are shaping up.

One of the most recent events that took place in Taiwan
concerns a certain Japanese multi-national company named NEC. Yesterday, NEC announced the official opening of its WiMAX Research and Development center in Taiwan. According to the company, the center has been created to help carry out interoperability testing (IOT) for the WiMAX CPE (customer premise equipment) products made by Taiwanese manufacturers and NEC's WiMAX network systems.

NEC also added, in the press notification released yesterday, that the center was going to cooperate with Taiwan WiMAX licensee Tatung Telecom (that back in November 2007 announced its intentions of acquiring 200 WiMAX base stations for Kaohsiung City) and CPE makers, including Alpha Networks, Accton Technology, Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB) and Quantra Microsystems in the joint development of base stations, CPE products and applications.

For the time being, the newly opened center is said to accommodate an R&D team and 20 staff members, which will have at their disposal an initial capital of US$657,900.

According to chairman Lin Wei-shan, Tatung Telecom, one of the above mentioned WiMAX licensees plans to launch application services such as long-distance education, medicare and security surveillance.

A number of important pieces of news regarding the development of WiMAX in Taiwan have surfaced during this year's Computex show, held in Taipei. Because of the high grade of significance, the Taiwanese government is paying for the development of WiMAX, so we are bound to hear more WiMAX-related news coming from here in the near future.
