Until late last year, 3D was a rather small niche market and it took a 3D film by a director the size of James Cameron to actually jumpstart the market and raise general interest in this display mode. In just the few months since then, the movie industry has practically embraced 3D, 3D television broadcasts have launched and, of course, a slew of 3D displays have been released by LCD suppliers worldwide. Now, with the 3D phenomenon not showing any signs of slowdown, 120Hz refresh rates have begun to make their way to even less than ordinary electronics.
To put it simply, 3D has surged in popularity, or at least seems to have, to the point where even all-in-one desktops have begun to implement support for it. In fact, a report indicates that NEC has even devised such an all-in-one that seeks to actually
enable this display capability at a low price point. The company demonstrated an all-in-one PC that had a 120Hz-capable LCD and used a Blu-ray player to play back 3D content. Unlike other, specialized solutions, this model could make do with simple, polarized glasses.
Unfortunately, the report did not mention anything regarding the system configuration of the AiO. In fact, all that can be garnered is what the photo of the PC shows, namely a decent screen size. The CPU, memory, amount of storage and, most importantly, graphics solution is a mystery, and will probably remain so until an actual spec sheet gets leaked to the public. This may not happen for a while yet, though, considering that even the date of launch is vague at best.
According to the report, the all-in-one should start selling sometime in 2010. This may mean anything. The AiO may start shipping in six months or even within a few weeks, both options being possible considering that the system itself has been already shown off. What remains to be seen is whether it will be affordable enough to intrigue buyers.
