The National Collegiate Athletic Association announces that it is terminating its collaboration with developer EA Sports for the NCAA Football video game series starting with 2014, apparently because of issues linked to ongoing and potential future litigation over trademarks.

The organization says, "The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes."

It seems that colleges and universities will have the option to decide whether they are interested in working with EA Sports on future NCAA Football video games.

The football simulation is a popular franchise for Electronic Arts, although it lacks the impact of Madden NFL.

The NCAA logo and name will only be included in the coming release, which is set to arrive on July 19 on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
