The availability of the quirky hospital comedy 'Scrubs' on the iTunes Music Store marks yet another first in the history of digital downloads.
The show has been made available jointly by NBC Universal and Walt Disney-ABC TV Group, and, although 'Scrubs' is produced and owned by Walt Disney
Co.'s Touchstone Television, this season's episodes will be available on NBC's 'storefront' on the iTunes site because NBC broadcasts the show. This is a first because, in the race to reap the profits of digital downloads, there are many behind the scenes battles between studio and network executives over who should control the 'window' for digital downloads of their shows.
This is the first time ever that rival media companies have joined together to provide content, instead of squabbling over who should control the window for distribution. SO far, all of the TV shows available on the iTunes music Store have been those that are owned and broadcasted by one single company. This might mark the beginning of a new trend and other companies might follow the example… one thing, however is for certain, it seems that NBC and Disney have reached a form of truce, at least when it comes to the iTunes Music Store.
