NBA 2K14 was originally released to support offline play, but fans are reporting that 2K Games has just patched in an always-online requirement for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of NBA 2K14.

Game fans revolted against the DRM policies that would prevent them from playing single-player games unless they were connected to the internet when the Xbox One version was first revealed.

Following the uprising and subsequently low pre-order numbers the game experienced, Microsoft removed the constraint from the game in order to please fans.

Nonetheless, 2K Games have just patched an always-online DRM requirement for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of NBA 2K14, as fans quickly discovered to their displeasure.

It is now no longer possible to play any single-player matches in any modes that use Virtual Currency. It seems that the decision was made in order to ensure people don't exploit the micro-transaction model in any way during offline sessions.

The VC is tied into all aspects of the game and verified through the 2K servers, as Gameranx reports.

Gamers are riled over the fact that the game did not originally have any of the always-online DRM when it was previewed and launched, and having it inserted after they have already bought the game makes them feel tricked.
