The world’s first view of the Earth from the vicinity of the Moon was taken on August 23, 1966 and NASA has been working on bringing those images back to life.

Today, on the anniversary of said day, NASA has released some breath-catching images of the Earth seen over a good portion of the moon.

The iconic image was taken from the United States Lunar Orbiter I when the spacecraft was on its 16th orbit, getting ready to pass behind the moon. For the past 20 years, the images have more or less become forgotten.

The newly released images are of a better quality and the details are quite impressive.

The pictures are a part of history and although they have never been released until now, they manage to take us back to a time when some of the space missions currently undergoing seemed impossible.
