Officials at the American space agency recently released a new Research Announcement (NRA), asking the scientific community to propose new research projects on space biology, to be conducted aboard the International Space Station.

According to the documents NASA published, the main goal of the proposals should be “to effectively use microgravity and the other characteristics of the space environment to enhance our understanding of basic biological processes.”

Among the most important factors affecting the agency's decision as to which proposals it will accept are the recommendations made in the 2011 Decadal Survey Report, by the National Research Council.

As a bonus, investigators will now have the “opportunity to take advantage of new cell, plant and animal research facilities being developed for the space station” in their studies. NASA expects step-1 proposals to be submitted by 17:00 EDT (2100 GMT), on October 31, and step-2 ones by December 19.
