Mythbuntu 14.04 LTS, an official Ubuntu flavor that is a standalone MythTV-based PVR system, has been released with a small delay.

Official Ubuntu releases and flavors always arrive on time, but sometimes various problems can delay the launch, and it happened with the Mythbuntu 14.04 LTS. The developers announced on their website that they had missed the launch window due to a couple of bugs.

It turns out that the Mythbuntu team found a few critical bugs, which impacted on the testing of the distribution. Before getting any version out the door, developers usually put their distros through a round of tests to ensure that everything is in order.

It would have been easy to release the distribution and to fix the problems on the next day, but they chose the harder route, to delay it. When they initially made the announcement, it seemed that it would take them a while to manage to fix the issues, but the community helped them quickly overcome the problems.

“After some last minute critical fixes and ISO respins by the release team (thanks again Infinity, we owe you and the rest of the release team a beer), the Mythbuntu team is proud to announce we have removed our socks and released Mythbuntu 14.04 LTS. This is the Mythbuntu team's second LTS release and is supported until shortly after the 16.04 release.”

“With this release, we are providing mirroring on sponsored mirrors and torrents. It is very important to note that this release is only compatible with MythTV 0.27 systems. The MythTV component of previous Mythbuntu releases can be be upgraded to a compatible MythTV version by using the Mythbuntu Repos,” reads the official announcement.

The operating system is based on MythTV 0.27, but the underlying OS is Ubuntu. It also uses the Xfce file system, but users can install most of the other desktop Mythbuntu environments from the repositories. Also, a number of other apps that can be usually found in Ubuntu, like LibreOffice, Evolution, some GNOME packages, haven't been included.

What's even more interesting than the delay itself is the fact that users who want to upgrade from one version to the next have been advised to wait until the release of Mythbuntu 14.04.1, which should arrive in the summer.
