There is a big issue going on at the moment regarding the future of the profitable franchise “X-Men.” With the current story thought to have reached its course, it's now being speculated that the future of the franchise lies in the past.

Hugh Jackman, the actor who plays Wolverine, the most popular character in the series, has recently announced that he soon plans to hang up his adamantium claws, so now producers are scrambling to find new venues to explore in terms of stories to tell.

They have already probed the past in the movie “X-Men: First Class,” so a precedent has been created. Entertainment Weekly is saying that the future to the series now lies with spinoff. Among the characters that are being eyed for separate movies are Mystique (thanks mostly to the work done by Jennifer Lawrence), Gambit and Deadpool.

“There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it. I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters,” says Lauren Shuler Donner, longtime producer for “X-Men” movies, in an interview.
