One of the advantages of running Microsoft technologies on multiple devices is that integration comes somewhat inherent to the products.

An illustrative example involves the next generation of Windows Home Server and the latest release of Windows Phone.

At the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2011) in Las Vegas last week, Microsoft announced and demoed a new add-in designed to bridge together Windows Phone 7 devices with servers running Windows Home Server codename Vail.

“This week at CES we unveiled a new WP7 add-in to be soon made available for Windows Home Server Code Name “Vail”,” revealed Microsoft’s Joel Burt.

The software giant has long touted its three screen vision, working to connect TVs, smartphones and PCs seamlessly via the Cloud.

The new Windows Phone 7 add-in for Windows Home Server Vail is certainly a step in the right direction.

“The Windows Phone 7 add-in creates a new feature on your Windows Phone which is currently called, “My Server”,” Burt added.

“The Windows Phone feature requires a Windows Home Server “Vail” setup and running with the Remote Web feature enabled.”

Burt does underline that My Server is still in development and that the release is nothing more than a Beta Build.

In this regard, the Redmond company will work to perfect the add-in, which will ship under another label when it’s finalized. Of course, Microsoft also continues to work on Windows Home Server codenamed Vail which has yet to be wrapped up.

The add-in can offer users as much as three screens with various functionality right on their Windows Phone 7 devices, enabling them to control the Home Server Vail servers from their phone.

Via the Alerts, Media & Account screens, WP7 customers will be able to deal with issues affecting their home servers, stream media content, including music and videos, upload content, and log out from the add-in.
