The rodents allegedly brought hi-tech spy gear over the Iranian border

Over time, animals have been used quite extensively in warfare-related activities, ranging from the messenger pigeons that carried secret messages up to bomb-sniffing dogs. However, what you're about to see as follows probably goes beyond anything you might have heard or seen up until now, if it proves to be a true story, of course.

Thus, according to an article by Tomasz Filipczak for AHN, it would seem that the Iranian authorities have announced that they've arrested over a dozen rodents charged with....espionage. Yes, your eyes are not mistaking, espionage. And if you're wondering just how an ordinary squirrel can become James Bond, then check out what the Iranian state-sponsored news agency IRNA reported.

"In recent weeks, intelligence operatives have arrested 14 squirrels within Iran's borders. The squirrels were carrying spy gear of foreign agencies, and were stopped before they could act, thanks to the alertness of our intelligence services." Although no exact information regarding the nature of the respective spy gear has been provided, it would seem that several GPS tracking devices were involved.

According to AHN, it seems that the story is quite real, especially since even the Iranian police commander Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqadam confirmed the report, claiming a number of squirrels had been caught bearing foreign spy gear within Iran's borders. Moreover, Iranian officials claimed that these rodents were actually used by the "evil" Western powers in an attempt to undermine the Islamic Republic.

Although this story is a little bit old (the squirrels were taken into custody 2 weeks ago), there is very little information available on the subject. "I have heard about it, but I do not have precise information," said the police commander, when interviewed by AHN.

However unlikely and weird this story might be, it only goes to show that we live in a strange, strange world, in which even animals are used for the most unholy purposes, even carrying around hi-tech gear for various espionage agencies.
