“I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary,” Heath Ledger said of how he prepared for the role of The Joker on Chris Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” The video above shows glimpses of said diary.

Ledger’s The Joker is considered one of the best executed and disturbing villains ever in a comic book based film, for which reason it also won him a posthumous Oscar.

His father, Kim Ledger, is now showing to the world the kind of preparation that went into the role. The video is lifted from the documentary “Too Young to Die” and, as a fan of Ledger’s, I must say, it’s bound to break your heart all over again at the thought of the kind of talent we lost.

“He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch,” the dad says of his son’s habit of locking himself up for weeks with a diary for a new role.

“The hospital scene is interesting because when he was a kid, his sister Kate liked to dress him up as a nurse. He was really funny like that. He also was in the movie,” he continues.
