Musix, a multimedia operating system aimed at musicians, sound technicians, DJs, filmmakers, graphic designers and users in general, has reached version of 3.0.1 and the developers have implemented a lot of important features.

There are not many operating systems out there that are aimed at musicians and other artists in the sound editing world, and Musix is probably among the best there is. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that the developers claim that Musix is completely free and it doesn't contain any piece of proprietary software.

Musix developers don’t mess around when they promote updates and improvements for their operating system and 3.0.1 is the prof that they take their work seriously.

“The development team of Musix GNU+Linux is proud to present version 3.0.1 Stable. This is a bugfix release related to installation fail due to lack of grub package. Also, now the ISO image is isohybrid, ie support boot from USB or DVD media,” said the developers in the official announcement.

Having a hybrid image is actually very important for a Linux distribution because it allows users to test the operating system from an USB stick and make changes to the OS that survive a reboot.

According to the changelog, a few editors like video editors like Kdenlive 0.9.6, AviDemux and Cinelerra have been added (it complete a list of video editors that was already quite large), OpenOffice has been implements the default office suite, and a number of KDE bugs have been squashed.

“Musix 3.0 boots by default in LXDE, but you can choose the tailored KDE and IceWM desktops or the original fluxbox and openbox; os-probe was installed to detect other systems during HD installation” also noted the developers.

The Linux distribution is also based on Kernel 3.4.14-gnu-RT23, which is said to be completely free. Also, the developers have made a very important announcement regarding the first time users.

If you start to use the distro just now, it’s recommended that you open all of the .starter demos in the folder /home/user/demos/starters/. This can be done very easy from the browser with the musixstarter app.

Keep in mind that this is a distribution build for music production and that it incorporates a large number of applications, which means that the size of the ISO is quite large (over 2GB).

More details about this Linux distribution can be found in the official announcement. Download Musix 3.0.1 right now from Softpedia.
