An interior decorator has been arrested for the illegal removal of a supportive wall which has caused a building collapse in Mumbai, India.

The collapse brought on the death of 25 residents, while several other people were injured on Friday morning.

The decorator ordered a wall to be torn down and never got permits for the construction works.

The wall included supportive beams, the Inquisitr reported. Taking it down destabilized the building and eventually led to it falling apart.

Interior designer Askhok Kumar Mehta is in police custody after being charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The charge is similar to the one for negligent death which exists in the United States.

Mehta had performed the design work for a client, but also had an office in the damaged building. The complex housed city employees and it was located in the financial district.

Repairs were supposed to be made on it when an inspection revealed several flaws last year. However, the city never went through with the reparation works.
