The universality of every application is determined by its capability of serving as many purposes as possible. Geeklog is particularly designed for blog development but it can also be used as a content management system that allows the construction of any type of website.

Geeklog is a PHP / MySQL based web application that is very easy to install and provides compatibility with older PHP / MySQL versions (beginning with PHP 4.1.0 / MySQL 3.23.2). You just have to upload the distribution archive content on the server, set the appropriate chmod values for a few files and directories, create an empty MySQL database and the one step installation will take place in less than a minute.

The default Geeklog distribution core can be extended through existing free plugins. As a consequence, image and media galleries, forums, ads management systems and more add-ons will allow you to extend the basic capabilities of this blogging application. Due to an easy to understand administration panel GUI (Graphical User Interface), even users without advanced programming knowledge will be able to create and maintain websites with any degree of complexity.

Version 1.5.0b1 comes with major changes both for back-end and front-end features. The OpenID authentication feature allows the website visitors to perform the login process based on their OpenID account details so that they have the same rights as a regular registered user. The website content can be easily edited with the FCKeditor version 2.6.

Others new important features are: themes XHTML compliance, comments can be included in static HTML pages, polls are more customizable allowing multiple questions for a single poll. The detailed description of all changes in this version can be found on Geeklog website. If you want to test this application or to update an existing Geeklog installation, it is available for download here.
