Microsoft has updated the resources made available to customers still leveraging Multimap in order to streamline the migration to Bing Maps.

The Redmond company acquired Multimap.com, a UK-based mapping and location-based services provider back in 2007, and worked to transition users and developers over to its own platform, Bing Maps.

The resources offered to devs can be accessed free of charge via the Multimap Web Service Upgrade portal.

“As you know we are in full upgrade mode, helping developers move to Bing Maps. We’ve just posted several very technical docs to the Multimap Web Service Upgrade portal that address common issues,” revealed a member of the Bing maps team.

“These documents walk through how things were done in Multimap, and then discuss how to do the same thing with Bing Maps – with LOTS of tested code samples.”

The Bing Maps migration portal is a developer hub designed to simplify the migration of appllications built with the Multimap Services to Bing Maps.

Microsoft is offering a wide range of support materials and guidance for developers to jump on the Bing Maps bandwagon.

After all, there isn’t much time left for them to do so. The software giant plans to discontinue Multimap Services on November 18, 2011.

“With several recent releases including the Bing Maps REST API and forthcoming features of a new Bing AJAX map control and a new spatial data hosting service, we have identified an increasing number of feature and API redundancies,” Microsoft explained.

“Our future investments will focus on delivering innovation on one platform for the Bing Maps APIs and closing any major feature gaps between Bing and Multimap. This will enable us to accelerate delivering you more mapping and location-based services innovation through one platform, across web and mobile.”
