Mozilla's PDF.JS Project, a JavaScript and HTML5 PDF Reader, Gets a Video Rundown

The web is ready to move beyond the plugin. For a long time, advanced functionality could only be achieved with a browser plugin, be it Flash, Java and so on. But there is a greater emphasis than ever on using standard web technologies for everything, which is why the PDF.js project was created.

Mozilla is working on a complete PDF renderer written in JavaScript, meaning that websites and, of course, any browser, can read and display PDF files, which are many online, without any third party plugins.

The project has been underway for a few months now and progress has been good.

The project was showcased by Julian Viereck at a GTUG meetup in Zurich. You can check out the full presentation in the video above, to catch up on what's new but also for an overview of the project.
