With Google Chrome recently introducing a revamped sync feature which now makes it easy for users to share settings and even themes between different Chrome installs, Mozilla Weave for Firefox is finally getting some serious competition. But Mozilla developers aren’t sitting idly by, the Firefox add-on has just gotten some improvements with the release of Mozilla Labs Weave Sync 1.2 (technically 1.2.1).

“We are happy to announce the release of Weave Sync 1.2. Based on your feedback, our main focus for this release has been on: increasing responsiveness, improving discoverability of remote tabs, creating a less disruptive ‘start over’ flow and providing additional levels of data protection,” Ragavan Srinivasan, one of the developers of Mozilla Labs Weave wrote.

The initial syncing has been tweaked again, so it now grabs your data faster the first time you install Weave Sync on a new device. Mozilla says this should mean that all of your data will be available within minutes of installing the add-on. Of course, that depends on how much data there is to sync, those who managed to amass huge bookmark collections will have to wait a little longer.

Remote tabs can now be accessed on the desktop version of Firefox in a single page. You can also get to them from the tab arrow at the end of the tab bar which now lists all of your tabs, local or remote. Another way of accessing them is by typing ‘about:weave-tabs’ in the address bar.

Another addition, which should prove very handy, is the new protection feature which ensures that your saved data is the most recent. This means that if you sync a device you haven’t used in a while, it won’t overwrite the newer changes. Weave Sync 1.2.1 will also be able to work with future releases, meaning that you will be able to sync with a device running Weave 1.3 without updating.
