Mozilla Weave Sync, the bookmark and preferences synchronization project for Firefox, has made it to the 1.0 release, the first major release. Part of the Mozilla Weave project which aims to integrate the browser with various web services, in a way, brings Firefox to the cloud. Weave Sync has been adding features with every iteration, and losing them in some cases, but is now feature complete as far as this stage of the project is concerned. Weave Sync 1.0 keeps bookmarks, opened tabs, passwords, history, even your Personas theme synced across different Firefox installs, including on mobile devices with the new Firefox for Mobile 1.0.

"We’re pleased to announce that the Weave Sync add-on for Firefox is now generally available to seamlessly bridge your desktop and mobile Firefox experiences," Mozilla's Ragavan Srinivasan wrote on behalf of the Weave team. "Using this free browser add-on from Mozilla Labs, you can securely access all of your personal data across all of your supported devices, making your Web experience instantly more personal and useful."

If you've been using previous versions Weave Sync, this is a good a time as any. Installing 1.0 over any other version other than the latest 1.0 RC4 will prompt Weave to do a full sync of the data to the servers. This shouldn't be a problem for most people, but if you're installing to a clean browser, you should backup the data from the servers first.

Mozilla also notes that both bookmarks and the history are uploaded in chunks so everything may not be available from the get go, depending on how much data there is to upload and how slow your connection is. Weave Sync also uploads only the 25 most recent tabs, so if you have more than 25 opened you will not get them all. However, all tabs will be available in the history.

Weave Sync is mature enough for most use cases, but there are still plenty of features that could make it in and the team is working on making everything else in Firefox synchronizable. "Future releases of Weave Sync will add support for synchronizing your browser add-ons, search plugins and other customizations and ultimately everything that makes your Firefox and Web experience personal," Mozilla said.
