The most prominent change in Mozilla Thunderbird 9 is that it is based on the new Mozilla Gecko 9 engine. It also features an opt-in system for users to send to the development team reports on performance and usability.

With this new version of the email client also comes improved support for Personas in “Compose” and “Address book” windows, as well as better handling for attachment through keyboard.

For Windows users, Mozilla introduced the possibility to hide and show the menu bar by pressing “Alt” key, a feature that is already present in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

As far as Thunderbird 3.1.17 is concerned, the client sees fixes that should improve both stability and security. Among these there was a bug that caused the application to fail to (offer to) remember authenticated proxy password.
