HTML5 has become a buzzword more than anything else and it's taken to mean the actual HTML5 standard, but also CSS3, WebSockets even WebGL. If this is confusing for tech folks, you can imagine how it all sounds to the non-tech people running enterprises.
They keep hearing about the new technologies, but don't really know what they're about or what they mean for businesses.
Mozilla has heard this several times so it's come up with a presentation, business folks love presentations, which showcases what HTML5 is, what it isn't and what HTML5 and related technologies mean for the future of the web.
"The last few days I was busy talking to in-house developers at two large enterprise companies, Sabre in Poland and SAP in Germany," Chris Heilmann, Mozilla's HTML5 and open web evangelist,
wrote.
"Both these companies approached us asking for a talk about HTML5 as the topic gets a lot of interest in the upper echelons and there is a lot of confusion about it," he explained.
"As we were in Poland anyways to attend Frontrow it was easy to visit Sabre and give a one hour presentation on the ins and outs of HTML5 and where the web might go. The day after the same talk was repeated over Skype for the German office of SAP," he added.
The presentation, both the slides and the
audio are now available for anyone. Since they're published under a Creative Commons license, anyone can use them at their own company to educate both developers and the people making decisions.
The
slides go through the standard things you'd expect, how the HTML5 syntax is simplified but also describe new technologies such as the Canvas or Video and Audio elements.
It's an interesting read, and listen, if you need to brush up on a few concepts but also if you need to educate others.
