The Jetpack project has long left the experimental label behind and the Mozilla Add-ons SDK, as it is now known, has now reached version 1.5. It's been getting small updates and improvements for a while now, but what makes this latest release special is support for mobile extensions, something that developers and users alike will surely enjoy.
"For the initial release of mobile compatibility we have the page-mod API working which will allow developers to create modifications to web content within their add-on. This is quite useful for creating mobile versions of website that do not have a good mobile support," Mozilla
explained.
Mobile add-ons are only supported in the Nightly and Aurora Firefox builds, with the native Android UI.
What this means is that Firefox for Android just got a lot more interesting. Add-ons have been Firefox's killer feature in the early days and they could prove a powerful asset in the mobile browser wars, especially now that Chrome for Android has become available.
