Mac users with an outdated Silverlight in Firefox are currently unable to use the plugin as Mozilla took the decision to block all versions under the 5.1 branch. The reason for this is that older versions of the Silverlight for Mac OS X are at the root of serious stability issues in Firefox.

The fix is an easy one, though, because all you have to do is get the latest version of Silverlight plugin. You can check if you have an outdated installation on this page.

Among the issues caused by the outdated plugin, there is a crash in Hotmail, but a multitude of other problems should be corrected once Silverlight is updated to release 5.1. However, these do not include the quirk with Netflix, which is under investigation at the moment.

Silverlight for Mac is available for download from here.

No matter how many times I install this Silverlight plugin it still doesn't seem to work. Netflix keeps telling me to install it. Frustrating!

I had this same peoblem and tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and silverlight but it didn't work. You need to delete your Firefox preference files from inside your library folder and it will work. Look it up online and be sure to backup your prefs first so you can undo it if need be. Good luck.

This is ridiculous! SL 4 works much better with Firefox and Netflix than SL 5 or 5.1. SL 5.1 makes all Netflix playback stutter/jitter/not smooth on my 2011 Mac mini with os x 10.7 or 10.8 under Firefox. So since Mozilla has done this I have now been forced to use safari on my htpc, talk about shooting yourself in the foot....
