Meanwhile, the old Movie2K domain is redirected via the German Pirate Party's servers

The Movie2K saga is far from over. While movie fans/pirates are happy that the site, or at least some version of it, is back under a new name and a new domain, Movie4K.to, behind the scenes things are trickier.

It's still unclear whether the new site has any direct link to the older and now dead Movie2K.

While it uses the same interface and has most of the same movies, the site could just be a clone put up by people completely unrelated to those that used to run Movie2K.

Obviously, Movie4K's owners had access to the software behind the site and probably the movies and TV shows, but that in itself doesn't prove much.

Then there's the fact that the owners of Movie2K apparently turned over ownership of the Movie2K domains to the German Pirate Party, without its knowledge.

Piratenpartei Deutschland was actually surprised to see that Movie2K was using the party's DNS servers. The move attracted the attention of the police, but the Pirate Party has now put up a page on the old Movie2K domain explaining the situation.

"This isn't our domain, and we don't know who owns it. However, they apparently redirected it to our servers. We don't know exactly why, but we assume that the people responsible for it wanted to allow us to inform the visitors about the issues with current copyright law," the page put up by the Pirate Party reads.

Until now, Movie2K was redirecting users to Movie4K. In fact, intentionally or not, movie2k.to still redirects visitors to movie4k.to. However, www.movie2k.to directs users to the Pirate Party page.

For now, people unable or unwilling to pay for a movie ticket or a DVD are satisfied with Movie4K, as well as the myriad of other streaming sites out there. But it remains to be seen how long this new site will live and whether it will continue to operate as is.
