No official statement came from the company

It is no doubt that Facebook has got a lot of attention from the media lately due to the privacy settings issue, and the 'Quit Facebook Day' movement surely implied that the social network would lose a lot of its fans. However, it seems that its user base keeps growing and that it reached, or at least it nears, 500 million members.

It should be noted that the company has not published any official statement regarding this number, but it comes from a very reliable source since it is displayed on the Facebook movie poster. In October, a new film by director David Fincher will be released to the audience, called The Social Network, and it presents the story of Facebook founders and their development. The first movie poster has been recently unveiled and, as already stated, it suggests that the social platform has 500 million users, according to the message: 'You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.'

Even if this number does not come as a complete surprise, it does make one wonder as to why the company officials have not made any announcements. They had already informed the press about the moment when they passed the 400-million threshold, in February, or later in May, when their members reached 450 million. However, even then, it is reported that there were sources which claimed that Facebook already had almost 500 million registered users.

On the other hand, there’s no better way to tell the world that Facebook reached 500 million users than to paint it nice and clear on its dedicated movie poster, besides being directed by the Oscar nominated filmmaker David Fincher. The Social Network also comes with a script written by screenwriter and producer Aaron Sorkin and with Jesse Eisenberg as the main actor, playing the role of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Coming back to the poster's motto, one might make plenty of speculations. For example, the creators might have been considering the number of users the social platform would have by the time the movie is released in theaters, and by October 1st, 500 millions will surely be the real number (assuming it does not reflect the current reality). Since the posters are coming out, a trailer is most probably in the making as well and perhaps it will shed some light on the idea behind the movie.
