Each year, Movember is met with a mixture of amusement and sincerity, but there’s nothing but the utmost seriousness that drives many men (and women) to join the cause. Movember is the term used for the month of November, when men (and some women) grow facial hair to raise awareness of men’s health issues, mostly cancer.

Some do it for the cause, some do it for fun, and a very select few do it for a combination of both. We’re here to talk about these: Movember is officially over now and it was the biggest so far.

To boot, we’re left with a collection of a few very impressive ‘staches that will go down in the annals of the most ridiculous facial hair arrangements of all times.

What is Movember?

Movember is a combination of “moustache” or “Mo” and “November,” and it’s the month when men grow out their facial hair, styled or not, to raise awareness of male cancers, like prostate and testicular.

During the entire month, men are encouraged to donate to various cancer research groups, to get more checkups and to lead overall healthier lifestyle. They’re also encouraged to grow out their own facial hair to spread the word.

Whereas a few years ago Movember was more like a joke for the rest of the world because it was just an incipient movement, today its spread and impact are undeniable. The campaign doesn’t just return positive results in terms of cancer awareness and prevention, but it’s also proved a hit online, because of men who dared to think facial hair differently than all others.

Some memorable examples are included in the gallery below: we have here men who aren’t just letting their facial hair grow for a month, they actually take the time and think of ways of styling it that are as original as they’re hilarious(ly) stupid.

With a topic as serious as that of cancer, we can all use a laugh every once in a while – and the men doing these crazy moustaches or the memes that have spread online like wild fire are here to help us with that.

Movember is fun, but it’s also inclusive

So Movember is efficient on all counts. As the Ice Bucket Challenge proved last summer, there is no better way to spread the word on a good cause / charity than by having it go viral, and the men who turn their facial hair into something novel and fun are actually contributing to the cause more than those who take it too seriously.

Movember isn’t just fun though: it’s also inclusive. Women too can become involved in Movember and some have even turned to growing out their bodily hair as well and posting photos of it on social media. Those who don’t wish to do that can still be a part of the movement, by signing up and spreading the word and donating.

These women are called Mo Sistas and they’re almost as important to the cause as the Mo Brothers. Unfortunately, they don’t get the same kind of media attention, because they lack the very thing that’s getting all the focus: the moustache, the Mo.

Speaking of the Mo, check out the gallery below. Because we can all use a laugh every once in a while.
