Movable Type Open Source is a new version of the well known blogging platform Movable Type. This web application is a full featured web application for blog publishing made in Perl.

The only difference between the commercial version and the open source version is the fact that the Movable Type Open Source application code is free, licensed under the standard GPL license. Being released with this license, Movable Type can be modified or redistributed for free for any purpose.

As a consequence, Movable Type Open Source has all the features existing in the commercial version plus a few improvements and bugs corrected. The templates, plugins, themes and more, that work with the commercial version, are compatible also with Movable Type Open Source version.

According to Six Apart Ltd. website, "MTOS is one of the only open source blogging tools with built-in support for an unlimited number of blogs, an unlimited number of authors, and sign-in with OpenID, with no plugins needed." Even more, Movable Type Open Source blogging platform supports other Six Apart Ltd. technologies like memcached, which is a memory object caching system having the role to minimize the database loading and to increase the rendering speed of dynamic web pages.

Movable Type Open Source will continually be developed and supported by the community, while the commercial version will be supported by the Six Apart Ltd. development team. For the commercial version, there are planned exclusive features and add-ons.
