The first Push To Talk (PTT) mobile phone in the world to run under Google's Android operating system, namely the Motorola i1, has been put on sale at SouthernLINC Wireless, a Southern Company. The handset comes with support for the carrier's Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), and can be purchased via all SouthernLINC Wireless sales and service locations, through authorized dealers and online on the carrier's website.

“The sleek, tablet-style Motorola i1 combines the convenience of PTT two-way radio with a premium browsing and messaging experience. Motorola i1 comes preloaded with the Opera Mini 5 Browser for optimized mobile Web browsing, Android WebKit Browser with Adobe Flash Lite for access to content created with Adobe Flash and multiple keyboard options, including Swype(TM), for quick and efficient messaging,” the carrier notes on the new device.

The specifications list of Motorola i1 includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper with flash, video recording capabilities and geotagging, a 3.1-inch touchscreen display safeguarded by a durable, rubber housing and sturdy Gorilla glass, microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32 GB of additional storage space (a 2GB card included in the package), and more. The phone packs a nice range of popular tools, such as Google services or Microsoft Document Viewer. Moreover, it syncs and integrates emails, calendar appointments and contacts, and offers access to the Android Market, from where users can download more applications for their devices, not to mention that files can be easily transferred to a computer via a USB drag-and-drop feature. Moreover, the new Motorola i1 has been Military Spec 810F certified and can withstand various natural factors, including rain, dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, low pressure, salt fog, humidity and solar radiation.

“SouthernLINC Wireless customers can now experience the first Android-powered iDEN smartphone in the marketplace,” said Bob Dawson, president and CEO of SouthernLINC Wireless. “With a touch screen, built-in Wi-Fi and enterprise e-mail capability, the feature-rich, multitasking Motorola i1 gives SouthernLINC Wireless customers the immediacy of our premier, Push To Talk service, the practicality of rugged construction and the ability to download data at Wi-Fi speeds.”

The Motorola i1 can be seen on the wireless carrier's website here, where it features a price tag of $199.99 on contract, or $399.00 without.
