Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility and wireless carrier Verizon Wireless unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas the new Motorola XOOM tablet PC, which would bring the new Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system from Google to Verizon's customers. The new device offers an improved experience courtesy of the new mobile OS version, through enhancing a series of already favorite features in the Android platform, including widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customizations.

The new device comes with a dual core application processor clocked at 1 GHz, while sporting a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display (of a 1280 x 800 pixels resolution), and being 4G LTE upgradeable.

The specifications list of the new tablet PC includes a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities, a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chat, support for 1080p HD video playback, or Wi-Fi connectivity.

Moreover, the new Motorola device also sports Adobe Flash Player support, built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting.

Motorola XOOM should land on shelves with Google Maps 5.0 with 3D interaction, and with access to the increasing number of applications available in the Android Market, not to mention access to over 3 million Google eBooks.

Users would also enjoy Gmail or Exchange email support on the new device, as well as the possibility to open and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations, or to view calendars.

“Motorola XOOM is a powerful addition to Verizon's product lineup and builds on our combined leadership with Motorola to deliver innovative mobile devices and service on the Android platform,” said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless.

“Motorola XOOM gives consumers complete access and control of their favorite personal content and work files whether through our nationwide 3G network, or through our lightning-fast 4G LTE network as it rolls out around the country.”

The new tablet PC from Motorola is set to arrive at Verizon Wireless in the first quarter of the ongoing year with 3G/Wi-Fi capabilities, while being set for an upgrade to 4G LTE starting with the second quarter of the year.

“Light, powerful and fundamentally different than anything else on the market, Motorola XOOM leverages the very best technology available today to redefine what a tablet experience can be,” said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Motorola Mobility.

“The first device to feature software designed specifically for tablets, Motorola XOOM goes everywhere you do and delivers everything you need.”
