For those who still have a Motorola XOOM tablet laying around and want to breathe fresh life into it, we have good news.

Motorola partnered up with Google (this was in the days before the search giant acquired Motorola Mobility) to roll out the first officially sanctioned Android tablet almost three years ago, so the device is quite advanced in age.

Now even if Google and Motorola have abandoned the tablet and no new software updates are being released, users who still own a XOOM device still have the opportunity to give Android 4.4.2 KitKat a spin.

Independent developers over at xda-developers have recently released custom ROMs based on Android 4.4 KitKat for all the major variants of the Motorola XOOM tablet (Wi-Fi only, 3G or 4G).

Naturally, the specs of the tablet are outdated, as the slate features 10-inch screen and 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, NDVIDA Tegra 2 dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but as it turns out, the device is still capable of sustaining Android 4.4.2.

Before jumping onboard with this, the devs warn you might be facing a few minor issues related to selecting alternate keyboards and audio dock volume controls, but these are not functions one would be using a lot.

The new builds offered for download are versions of the OmniROM, a custom ROM that has surfaced recently but seems to have become quite popular with users of phones and tablets.

Also before getting started, users should repartition to bigpart, if they haven’t done so already. They will need to load the special bigpart TWRP in order to proceed to the usual installation (like with any other custom ROM).

To get started, select the appropriate model (Wi-Fi, 4G and 3G) and follow the installation tips provided by developer Schischu on the forum.
