However, since the company has been bought by Lenovo, things are about to change, or at least that's what the latest information emerged online suggests.
Microsoft and Lenovo announced a few months ago that the Chinese company would launch its first Windows Phone handset this summer. It's mostly likely a budget-friendly smartphone to be powered by Windows Phone 8.1 right out of the box.
But what about Motorola? Will the US-based company stay true to its marketing policy and release Android smartphones exclusively?
Even though Lenovo stated that it has no intention of mingling with Motorola's roadmap, it looks like this was only available for last year.
This year Motorola might launch a smartphone that won't be powered by Android. The third major mobile platform, Windows Phone is still under 5% market share worldwide.
Motorola might not launch a Windows Phone handset after all
However, with the launch of Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft hopes that its mobile operating system will gain traction on the smartphone market.
Until then, Microsoft needs as many partners as possible, and since Lenovo has already confirmed it will launch its own Windows Phone in just a few months, it won't come as a surprise if Motorola does the same thing.
A certain Motorola Solutions TC70xx11 powered by Windows Phone 8.1 has been spotted in Basemark benchmark. The smartphone sports a 720p display and dual-core processor that scored 497 points, which is very low.
Judging by the phone's codename, this might not be a Motorola Mobility smartphone, but a Motorola Solutions device.
Since Motorola Solutions is not part of Lenovo, it remains to be seen whether or not this device is real or not. We'll probably find out more in the coming months, but a Motorola smartphone running Windows Phone would be very interesting.
