Starting with Tuesday, owners of a Motorola XOOM tablet PC started to receive a new software update on their devices, one that brought the newly unveiled Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system flavor to them.

Google already announced the availability of the software update for the device during the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco, yet Motorola felt that they should unveil more details on the update, and they just did so.

According to them, the software update would arrive on all XOOM devices available for purchase via Verizon Wireless, with all of the new features Google touted at the conference included into the mix.

As soon as the new OS version is available on their devices, Motorola XOOM owners would be able to use a Bluetooth headset during video chats, to easily resize widgets on homescreen, and do much more.

Some of the expanded functionality that the new software update would bring forth includes:

- Support for the new Android Market movie rentals service with thousands of titles available for immediate viewing on the Motorola XOOM’s high-resolution display or on a larger screen via HDMI

- Full support for the final release of Adobe Flash Player 10.2, delivering significant performance enhancements when viewing rich Flash content on the web

- Resizable widgets to enable further customization of home screens

- Support for USB-connected peripherals and accessories, such as keyboards, mice, game controllers and digital cameras

- Expanded Bluetooth features to support Bluetooth headsets in Google Talk™ video chats and Bluetooth mouse support in addition to additional shortcut keys with the Bluetooth keyboard

- Picture Transfer Protocol Feature support to enable easier transfer of photo files to your PC without the need for drivers

The over-the-air software update for Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) will arrive on Motorola XOOM first starting with this week, but should reach other devices as well soon.

Motorola Mobility also announced that the new software update is expected to become available for Motorola XOOM with Wi-Fi and for other flavors of the device in the next few weeks.
