Motorola is said to be preparing a new cheap, low-end, basic mobile phone, one expected to come under the tag W165. The newly spotted Motorola device is very simple, design-wise, and would rather resemble handsets we used to see launched about four of five years ago.

The company’s move can be seen as a legitimate one, considering that there are a lot of people who are not looking for a sophisticated phone with a lot of features, but rather for a simple device that comes with basic functionality and allows its owner to stay in touch with all the people he/she needs to. Considering the simplicity of the phone, Motorola is expected to ship it to emerging markets, yet it seems that the device will be spotted in the United States as well, mainly due to the fact that it's the company's home country.

The W165 specifications that emerged on the Web reveal the fact that this is a device that supports dual band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 or 850 / 1900 MHz), and features a 1.44 inch CSTN display with 65K colors and 128 x 128 pixel resolution and measures 108 x 46 x 12.5 millimeters. Additionally, the W165 sports a 2.5mm headset jack. The phone includes a 780 mAh battery, whose performance has not been unveiled yet. The weight of the device is only 77 grams.

It seems that Motorola does not think that releasing a simple phone would be a degrading move, and there are some voices that say other manufacturers are on its side as well. The new W165 should be able to appeal to a lot of people, as it is expected to be a rather cheap device. Specific information on the price tag of the new Motorola W165 has not been unveiled yet, and an exact launch date hasn't been announced either.
