Motorola confirmed a few months ago that some of its smartphones would be upgraded directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop. The original Moto X is one of these devices that were promised Lollipop 5.1.

Moreover, the US-based handset maker announced last week that Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X should arrive sometime this month.

Today, Motorola's David Schuster informed Moto X and Moto X (2nd Gen) owners that their promised update should arrive next week if all goes well. Here is his full statement:

“We started soak test today for Moto X (2nd Gen) for the following retail channels: Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Singapore and Sweden.

“We started soak test today for Moto X (1st Gen) for the following retail channels: Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.

“If all goes well we would expect full deployments to start next week.”

An exact release date should be announced closer to launch

Motorola is one of the few companies that managed to upgrade most of its smartphones to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Even those with mid-range specs have received the update, or will get it later.

Although Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X has already been released in some regions, the update is not yet available globally.

But the situation will change once the soak test ends successfully and Motorola starts rolling out Android 5.1 Lollipop for the original Moto X and Moto X (2nd Gen). Until then, the Moto X is stuck on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, which is the last major update received by the smartphone.

We will keep an eye out for any additional details on Android 5.1 Lollipop for Moto X and Moto X (2nd Gen), so stay tuned for more on this one.
