Mobile phone maker Motorola has just confirmed that a new software update is currently being released on its DROID 2 devices on Verizon Wireless' airwaves. The company started the soak test of this update only a few days ago, and has just confirmed that it already started to arrive on DROID2 devices at the time of this article.

However, the same as with other software updates from the company. The roll-out will take place in phases, which means that some users will still have to wait for it to arrive on their phones.

“DROID 2 by Motorola users: your upgrade to Android 2.3 is now rolling out in phases. Numerous enhancements include new download manager app, multi-touch key-chording, new user interface, and more,” Motorola announced.

To check on the availability of this update, users should head over to Menu > Settings > About phone > System update, the handset vendor explained.

Recently, Verizon has published on its support website the release notes for the new software update, which suggested that the release time frame was near, and it seems that our supposition at that time panned out.

The new update comes along with a wide range of enhancements and improvements into the mix, both related to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS from Google, as well as some delivered specifically for the DROID 2 smartphone.

Some of the changes that Gingerbread will bring along include a new download manager, more application and power management options, various changes brought to the user interface, new widgets and new icons, and more.

Other enhancements that this software update will bring along will affect the battery life of DROID 2, along with syncing of contacts, the display of messages, Exchange ActiveSync features, Verizon's V CAST services, and more.

All the necessary details on the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system update for the Motorola DROID 2 and Verizon can be found on the wireless carrier's support website here (PDF). (via)
