On Thursday, mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility and wireless carrier Sprint announced the launch of a new Android-based 4G smartphone, the Motorola PHOTON 4G, a powerful handset set to land on shelves at Sprint later in summer.

The new mobile phone comes with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 application processor inside, with two cores clocked in at 1GHz each, for increased performance capabilities, and with support for the carrier's fast Sprint 4G Network.

“Motorola PHOTON 4G provides on-the-go users with an edge in managing their lives, around the world,” the wireless carrier announced.

The new handset is powered by Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, offering users the possibility to multitask, enjoy various services, and browse the Internet on the carrier's network.

Motorola PHOTON 4G does it all, providing users with an array of versatile tools, like the Motorola webtop application, allowing users to access and create content from a larger screen while connected to a Motorola accessory dock (available for purchase following device availability),” Sprint stated.

The specifications list of the new mobile phone would include a 4.3-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a qHD resolution, along with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard memory, and support for up to 32GB of external storage via microSD cards.

The Motorola PHOTON 4G comes with support for GSM networks, making it a fit for roaming internationally, as well as with Sprint 3G / 4G connectivity. It also sports WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, aGPS with Google Maps, and 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot functionality.

There is also an 8-megapixel photo snapper packed on the phone's back, with dual-LED flash and video recording capabilities, along with a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

Motorola PHOTON 4G offers support for Sprint ID for enhanced personalization capabilities, as well as worldphone capabilities to access emails, calendars and news around the world, and fast access to the Android Market for downloading and installing applications.

One other feature of this phone would be the “ability to utilize the webtop application while connected to a Motorola accessory dock (sold separately) to open, view, edit and send Microsoft Office documents using cloud-based web apps through the full Mozilla Firefox browser,” Sprint notes.

The Android-based mobile phone should arrive on shelves at Sprint in summer, but no specific release date is known for the time being. No info on its pricing emerged either.
