With modified specs when compared to the original

Mobile phone maker Motorola is reportedly gearing up for the release of a new Android-based device on the United States market, namely the Motorola Motoroi. The handset, also known as the Motorola XT720, was launched in Korea a while ago, where it registered quite a success, and should arrive stateside under a different name and, of course, with modified specs.

According to a recent article on Phandroid, while there are no official details on the matter, a source close to Motorola's plans suggested that a Motoroi sibling would be en route to the United States, and that it should land at one of the wireless carriers in the country, namely Cincinnati Bell. The third quarter of the ongoing year should bring Motoroi to the carrier, but we'll take all this with a grain of salt for the time being.

On the other hand, Motorola Motoroi was previously rumored (with an apparent confirmation from the phone maker) to be on its way to the UK market too, though with modified internal chips and with a different name, which might suggest that Motorola would indeed plan to expand the phone's global availability. According to Phandroid, we should expect to see Android 2.1 running on the phone when it lands, with great chances that specs like an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, or an HDMI-out port would be included in the package.

In the meantime, we should note that Cincinnati Bell has launched its first Android-based handset only recently, the Commtiva Blaze. Since the device, which retailed for $99.99 on a two-year contract and for $299.99 off contract, has seen great traction among the carrier's users, being sold in a matter of days, it does make sense that the company is considering the release of more phones powered by Google's Android operating system. It is still unknown whether more operators will pick the Motoroi up, yet more details might emerge as the launch day approaches, so stay tuned to learn the news.
