Motorola MotoYuva W230 Entry-level Music Phone

- Available in India

By: Florin Troaca, Communications News Editor

Motorola recently launched a new entry-level mobile phone, MotoYuva W230, a handset that brings music to mobile consumers for an affordable price. Part of the MotoYuva series
(together with MotoYuva W180), specially created for the Indian market, the new phone is available for the price of 3050 INR, meaning about 77 USD, at most Motostores and resellers.

Weighing only 81 grams, MotoYuva W230 comes with a simple design and has a rather small 128 x 128 65K color display with changeable front plate. The built-in MP3 player with dedicated music keys for quick access allows users to listen to their favorite songs anytime, anywhere, and the compatibility with Windows Media Player 11 (or above) enables music transfers from a PC directly to the phone.

MotoYuva W230 comes with a 256 MB memory card, but that can be extended to 2GB, to make space for up to 500 songs.

A cool thing about the new Motorola is its CrystalTalk technology that enables users to experience a sharp and clear sound even in noisy conditions. Other features that MotoYuva W230 comes with include GPRS, Hinglish Predictive Text, currency converter, event reminder, calendar, calculator, Indian wallpapers and ring tones. Also, the handset comes equipped with stereo headset and USB cable. With a full-charged battery, the phone should provide a 550 minutes talk time and up to 450 hours of stand-by time.

With its 1.1 billion population, India is clearly an important country for Motorola, as it's an emerging mobile market that reached 200 million subscribers in 2007 (and the number will continue to grow rapidly in the next years). Entry-level phones are usually successful in this type of market, and Motorola tries to take advantage of this fact in order to re-conquer the No. 2 position in the mobile industry.

Dear Avinash,
I own MotoYuva W230 and am also struggling to do the same.
The W230 seems to have builtin modem.
First of all we need to install the drivers from www.motorola.com/support/w230 and download the file from link USB modem drivers. Install it and it will create a virtual COM port for the modem.
Open HyperTerminal and try to connect to the port it. You can check the actual port number from "device manager" on WinXP.
Once you connect it will say "AT command Interpreter ready"
Here you can give commands
at+cgatt
OK
at+cgact
OK
at+cgdata
OK
after last command if your GPRS is active, the icon on topline will change to connected.
This hints to presence of GPRS modem but I am still not able to connect using my phone.
Please update anyone can indicate way forward.

I purchased this phone from Global Access in Bangalore on Feb 25. I am repenting my decision every day. Do not buy if you have ever used a Nokia. The user interface on Motorola W230 YUVA is Disastrous to say the least. Many menu commands do not work. For example Recent Calls > select > view > store does not respond. There are many such commands which simply do not respond. When you enter a contact, it comes up with dictionary mode to enter name! Messaging is a tedious experience. To put a full stop it takes seven key strokes! Very unpredictable behavior. Music player is so-so. You cannot select a song and expect it to continue to play from there on. You need to press PLAY button every time a song gets over, manually select next and press PLAY! There is no missed call list. You have to look at the received call list and look for which ones are checked and which ones are not to figure out missed calls. Every day i am finding a new anomaly in this phone. Motorola needs to update its user interface, it is pre-historic user interface Keys strokes respond very slowly. Takes ages to type. Just to type ‘no’ it takes more than 2seconds. Motorola does not respond to emails to customer care. No response to any complaints anywhere. I want to sell it for half the price.
