The third Motorola Moto X is still a few months away from us

Motorola’s current flagship, the Moto X, is already six months old, so some of you might be wondering whether it’s time to start thinking about what the next-gen model might bring to the table.

By the look of things, a 2015 iteration of Motorola’s most popular phone to date might make it out on the market sometime later this year. When exactly will this happen? We can’t give you a specific date for it, but there are high chances we won’t be seeing the phone arrive before the second half of the year.

However, this week, we’ve received a confirmation from Motorola’s President himself, Rick Osterloh, who stated on Twitter that the company was trying “to stay on a roughly annual cycle for all of our products, including the Moto X.”

So there you have it, since the soon-to-be-previous Moto X saw the light of day around August or September, we can hope to see the third-gen Moto X make a debut around the same period.

The third-gen Moto X is going to be a Snapdragon 810 phone

You might probably remember that last month Motorola and Qualcomm confirmed that the next-gen Moto flagship smartphone would take advantage of the controversial Snapdragon 810 platform. Even if the Moto X name is not mentioned per se, the two companies were probably referring to the third-gen Moto X.

The second-gen Moto X arrives with a 5.2-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution (424 ppi) and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The smartphone draws power from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with Adreno 330 GPU on top.

With the flagship, Motorola is also throwing in 2GB of RAM and either 16GB/32GB or 64GB of internal storage.

Back when it launched, the Moto X 2014 shipped out with a stock-looking version of Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box, which since then has been upgraded to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

Actually, Motorola was one of the first companies to pick up the Lollipop update after the new build made its way into the wild.

Google released the Android 5.1 version a few days ago, and Motorola already announced that the second-gen Moto X would be getting the build soon. Android 5.1 is currently available only for the Nexus bunch.
