Android 5.0 Lollipop has been out and about for half a year now, but most Android devices out there continue to remain stuck at Android 4.4 KitKat.

While a lot of smartphone models are still waiting to get a taste of Lollipop sweetness, Google has recently announced the Android 5.1 iteration. The build is currently available only for the Nexus host of smartphones and tablets.

Usually, when a new update comes into the wild, the Google’s Nexus devices are the first to pick it up, followed by the Google Play Editions.

By the look of things, a few weeks after the initial rollout of the update for the Nexus devices, the Motorola Moto G Google Play edition is also receiving an OTA update to Android 5.1 that weighs 171MB.

You can download the OTA Zip file and apply it on your device. It seems that the Moto G is the first GPe to get the new Android 5.1 Lollipop update and hopefully more will follow in the upcoming days.

Android 5.1 brings new features like support for multiple SIM Cards, Device Protection and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones.

So basically, devices updated to Android 5.1 will be allowed to use more than one SIM card on a device with multiple SIM slots.

The second major feature is Device Protection, which provides an extra layer of security. When lost or stolen, the Android 5.1 device will remain locked until the owner signs in with their Google account, even if someone performed a reset to factory settings.

Motorola aims to update other phones to Android 5.1 as well

The build number for the Android 5.1 update is LMY47M, but if you haven’t seen it arrive on your device yet, don’t fret and keep in mind that updates such as these are sent out in waves. Or you could go ahead and download it.

Regardless, Motorola has also confirmed the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for its second-gen Moto X smartphone that is currently undergoing a soak test.

Also a few weeks ago, the company’s software engineer Luciano Carvalho announced that the Motorola Droid Turbo would be updated directly to Android 5.1, thus skipping the Android 5.0.x stage.
