Wireless carrier Cellular South has officially unveiled plans to carry the Motorola Milestone on its airwaves in the near future. The handset is already available for purchase in the United States on Verizon Wireless' network, known by the name of Motorola DROID, and it should arrive at Cellular South this summer, the company announced.

The Motorola Milestone is only one of the Android-based handsets the company aims at delivering to its subscribers during the ongoing year. For what it's worth, based on the success DROID had at Verizon, one should agree that this is a great choice to start an “Android summer,” as the carrier states on its coming soon page.

Here's what they note on Milestone: “It's almost here! The summer of Android kicks off with the unveiling of the Motorola Milestone, the latest Android phone from Cellular South. This blazing-fast smartphone features: - The world's thinnest QWERTY keyboard. - The largest hi-res Android screen (3.7" widescreen display). - Android 2.1, featuring voice recognition, GPS (with turn-by-turn navigation), 3D wallpapers. - Google Mobile Services built-in, including Google Maps, Google Talk, GMail, and YouTube. - Quick and easy access to tens of thousands of apps via Android Market.

In case there are still some yet unfamiliar with what the Motorola Milestone can offer, we should mention that the 3.7 inch touchscreen display delivers a 480 x 854 pixel resolution, as well as the fact that the phone sports a 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash on the back. Users will also take advantage of a sliding QWERTY keyboard, of 256MB of RAM, and 512MB of ROM, in addition to a microSD memory card slot for expanding the available storage space.

The Milestone measures 115.8 x 60 x 13.7mm, and sports Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi (802.11g) connectivity options, as well as built-in AGPS. Cellular South will have the device available with Google's Android 2.1 right from the start, and there are also chances that it would upgrade it to Android 2.2 as soon as Motorola makes the solution available.
