The European version of the popular Motorola DROID 2, Milestone 2 has just received a maintenance update that will bring its software to version 2.4.24.

Although many of those who own the Milestone 2 are hoping to get the Gingerbread upgrade anytime in the future, it looks like Motorola won't be upgrading this one any further.

Motorola already published the Android Software Upgrade roadmap for all its smartphones and none of the devices released last year will taste Gingerbread.

However, the U.S.-based manufacturer is still rolling out minor software updates that are meant to improve the performance and functionality of the Milestone 2.

The software update version 2.4.24 is only available for non-US models via the MSU (Motorola Software Update) service and/or OTA (over-the-air).

The regions where the update is now available, as well as the providers are listed below:

- O2 Germany (update is available OTA and MSU); - Retail Deutschland, Austria & Switzerland (MSU only); - Retail France (MSU only); - Retail UK (MSU only).

All Motorola Milestone 2 devices with current software version 2.2.13, 2.2.16 or 2.3.4 are eligible for the update, as long as the smartphones are purchased from one of the above regions/providers.

After downloading and installing the software update, users will notice the following changes:

- Phone and call stability: Improved stability, resulting in fewer occurrences of unresponsiveness and/or programs closing unexpectedly; - Updated Google Android applications: This enhancement provides an updated version of Google Mobile Services apps; - Improved phone performance: Performance improvements for touch screen, proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor; - Improved security: This enhancement contains new Google security patches.

Before trying to install the update, it is recommended to have the battery at least 50% charged to avoid interruptions during the updating process. A SIM card is also required to install the software update.
