Motorola has made one step further in the way of providing new solutions for developing their OpenSAF code base. This is a benchmark which will bring its contribution in creating new and evolved applications for mobile phones in the future.

The OpenSAF project has been announced for some time, at the beginning of this year. This stands for an open source project which will accelerate the general adoption of the SA Forum (Service Availability Forum) operating environment.

What OpenSAF specifically plans on doing is to develop complementary services in order to deploy and manage software. Moreover, Motorola hopes that their suggestions will help the SA Forum specifications be accepted at a faster pace. Nokia Siemens is also a supporter of this initiative, along with Ericsson, HP and several other communication leading companies.

Another objective of the OpenSAF is to encourage the use of an open source licensing model independent of any commercial implementation. They also hope that computing technology companies and NEPs will adopt an operating environment which will prove to be efficient at a large scale.

"We are very pleased to announce our intent to form an industry-wide consortium that will manage the open source project and also to make this initial OpenSAF code base available. This is an important next step following our original announcement of the project in February", said John Fryer, leading the OpenSAF project on behalf of Motorola's Embedded Communications Computing business. He further added that "We are also pleased with the decisions of a broad segment of industry leaders such as Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and HP to provide initial support for the OpenSAF project".

OpenSAF has received a great amount of interest from customers. Motorola plans on choosing this open source project instead of the Avantellis one which they are working with at this time.
