The era of tablet PCs is here, and users in South Africa can also take full advantage of it with the Motorola XOOM tablet PC that Motorola has just announced as being on its way to various wireless carriers in the country.

The Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based tablet PC is set to make an appearance on the airwaves of Cell C, Vodacom, MTN and 8ta, featuring a recommended retail price of R6599.

The company says that XOOM will be released in the country in August, and that carriers will also have it available with various monthly contracts for their customers.

With a dual-core application processor inside and with 1 GB of RAM, the Motorola XOOM can deliver great performance capabilities, complemented by multimedia features and support for a great deal of applications and Google Mobile Services.

The tablet PC comes with a 5MP photo snapper on the back for users to capture various moments of their lives (HD video recording capabilities available), as well as with a front-facing camera for video calling.

Not to mention that Motorola packed it with a large 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 widescreen HD display that can prove great when it comes to viewing videos or photos while on the go.

XOOM also has to offer support for Google Maps 5.0 with 3D, as well as Adobe Flash Player 10.2 for a great web browsing experience.

The tablet PC is accompanied by a series of accessories aimed at expanding its functionality, including a Standard Dock, a Speaker HD Dock for sending HD content directly to a TV via HDMI, and a custom keyboard with Bluetooth wireless technology.

Motorola XOOM redefines the tablet device category. We want to enhance people’s abilities to have fun and connect with family and friends while staying productive on the go,” says Megan Nicholas, mobile devices lead for Motorola Mobility South Africa.

“Motorola is a forward-thinking organisation with a heritage of innovation. Motorola XOOM is another device designed specifically for individuals that demand excellence when it comes to creating or consuming content. The Honeycomb user experience improves on Android favourites such as widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customisation.”
