Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility might be finally getting ready to deliver the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system to the owners of its Motorola ATRIX 4G smartphone, some of the latest reports on the matter suggest. Apparently, the company is kicking off the testing of this software update, and has already announced users that it was looking for a number of 1,000 people interested in becoming beta testers for Gingerbread.

The company announced that it would choose the first 1,000 applicants on a first come, first serve basis, and that the survey will end today, which means that the delivery of the beta builds for these handsets might start soon.

“We're getting ready to have a pre-release for Gingerbread (Android 2.3.X) on your AT&T ATRIX 4G. Please fill out the following survey to confirm your interest in this soak opportunity,” Motorola reportedly notes in an email sent to ATRIX 4G owners.

“This survey period tentatively ends at 9am 7/18/11 Central time, provided all spots are filled,” the company also announced.

Things are as clear as they could be. With the pre-release Gingerbread built on its way to beta testers, the official release could not be far behind at all.

Some of the previous rumors on the availability of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the Motorola ATRIX 4G suggested that Motorola might be set to release it before the end of July, and it seems that things are indeed moving in this direction.

However, users should not keep their breath while waiting for the software to land. After all, the official deployment will kick off only after the beta testing period is over, and only if it is successful.

If things go wrong, we might not hear anything of Gingerbread for ATRIX 4G for the next few weeks. However, provided that all will go according to plan, an official announcement should be made in the not-too-distant future.
