Recently, mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility, Inc. and NII Holdings, Inc. announced the extension of their supplier agreement through which Motorola will provide iDEN handsets to NII Holdings through 2014.

The two companies have been working together in this area for the past 14 years, and the new agreement shows that both companies are committed to support iDEN technology as a leading platform for Push to Talk services.

The duo has been offering iDEN services to subscribers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru.

NII Holdings is the largest iDEN network operator in Latin America, where it operates under the NEXTEL brand. It has over nine million subscribers.

“We are committed to offering our subscribers differentiated wireless services and with this agreement we continue to deliver on that promise with exciting and innovative devices and services,” said Greg Santoro, executive vice president and chief marketing and strategy officer, NII Holdings.

“Push to Talk functionality continues to be a primary mode of instant communication for millions in the Latin American region, and we are pleased to continue this fast, flexible and affordable service.”

The new extension was also meant to expand the scope of the supply agreement to the provision of a range of new mobile phones and services for the wireless carrier's next-generation networks.

Among these, the duo mentions PTT and 3G enabled handsets, as well as a wide range of other devices and accessories, including the Motorola XOOM tablet PC, powered by Google's Android operating system.

“Motorola Mobility and NII have enjoyed a longstanding partnership and we are encouraged by the strong growth of their customer base,” said Mark Shockley, senior vice president, general manager, Global Go-to-Market, Motorola Mobility.

“Devices featuring PTT technology remain an integral part of our overall portfolio and we look forward to working with NII to bring both iDEN and next-generation products to market in the future.”

Motorola is one of the leading mobile phone makers in the world, and also a leader in the manufacturing of handsets that utilize the PTT platform. The company is committed to support iDEN's expansion around the world with handsets that meet user's needs.
