As we reported last week, Verizon and Motorola are close to deploying the highly-anticipated Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the DROID 2.

According to the latest hearsay, Motorola started to send soak test invites for the DROID 2 Gingerbread update, about a week ago.

Starting today Motorola plans to start the actual soak test, the company claims in a post published on its official forum.

Hello again. Thanks for agreeing to provide feedback on this latest software. Starting tonight at 11:59, you will get the update pushed to your phone.”

Software update build number 4.5.601 seems to be the final version of the upgrade, the file that will soon be distributed to all Verizon Motorola DROID 2 owners.

Users who received the invites via email are advised against performing a factory data reset in advance of the upgrade.

Those who accidentally do a factory reset will see their MEID removed from Motorola's list, which means that they will not receive the upgrade during the test period.

The long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the DROID 2 brings lots of new features and improvements, including, but not limited to the following:

Enhancements

- New App to manage all of your downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps; - Under Manage Applications, a new “Running” tab displays a list of active applications, as well as the storage and memory being used by each.

Improved Word Selection and Copy Functionality

- New capability to select a word via press-hold. A second press of the selected word copies the selected characters; - New widgets, icons and screens with refreshed colors.

Web Browsing and Data Access

- Improved battery life while using Wi-Fi; - Fixed issue that caused frequent data connection drops; - Mobile Hotspot status is displayed accurately.

No details about the possible release date of the update, but it usually takes Motorola about two weeks to make a thorough test for a major update, such as this one.
